The next morning, when Charles came downstairs, Yolanda was already eating breakfast at the dining table. He sat down without even looking at her.

Yolanda kept her head down. She knew Charles was mad at her.

Last night, she hadn’t taken Teresa’s call on purpose. Charles hadn’t yelled or punished her, but the cold shoulder he was giving her now spoke volumes. He hadn’t even said goodnight to her last night.

Yolanda knew Charles was angry, really angry.

“Daddy…” Yolanda tentatively turned her head, her voice soft and pleading.

Charles’s phone rang just then. He ignored Yolanda completely and answered it. It was a call from Logan Manor.

Richard’s voice crackled with displeasure, “It’s been over half a year since you brought Yolanda and Teresa back to see me. And on your father’s birthday, I had a meeting with friends and was unable to see you. Do you think I’m dead and buried just because I didn’t call? Are you going to take away my chance to see Yolanda and Teresa, huh?”

Richard was known for his hot temper, but his status within the family was unquestioned. He had single–handedly built Logan Group. Without him laying the groundwork, the Logan Family would never have become the most powerful family in Riverdale.

Charles was used to Richard’s tactics, but he still frowned as he replied, “Sometime in the next couple of days.

Richard didn’t even listen. He put his foot down. “Tonight. That’s final.”

Listening to the dial tone, Charles fell silent.

As he set the phone down, Yolanda came over and asked, “Daddy, was that Mr. Richard?”

After all, they were father and daughter, No hard feelings lasted long. Charles didn’t brush her off this time. He answered, “Yeah, He wants to see you.”

Hearing this, Yolanda’s legs started kicking with happiness. “Okay. I haven’t seen Mr. Richard in ages. I miss him

so much.”

Richard adored Yolanda. Whatever tasty treats or fun toys she wanted, she got them. Charles felt Richard spoiled Yolanda way too much, which was why he didn’t take her back very often.

Seeing Yolanda’s excitement, Charles decided to be straight with her. “Mom will be coming back with us too.”

At that, Yolanda pouted. “Then I don’t wanna go,”

Charles didn’t want to force her. He used Richard as a reason. “If you don’t go back, Mr. Richard will be really sad.” 

Hearing this, Yolanda’s heart softened. “Alright,” she said, “I’ll go back with you, Daddy.”

Charles smiled faintly and didn’t say anything else.

Chapter 19

Not long after, Charles called Teresa. He rarely reached out first, and he didn’t even have her number saved. He had to find it by the last few digits.

The call connected almost instantly.

“What is it?” Teresa’s voice held a hint of impatience.

Charles paused for a beat before replying, “Grandpa Richard wants us at Logan Manor tonight. Said he misses Yolanda and you.”

Teresa was driving when Charles spoke. She went quiet for a moment. When she answered, her voice was tight. “Got it.”

Even if for nothing else, Teresa felt she should go for Richard’s sake. He had been the kindest person to her in the Logan family, and she had never forgotten his kindness. 

Hearing Teresa agree, Charles wasn’t surprised. He simply told her, “Then I’ll pick you up this afternoon.”

Teresa didn’t hesitate. “No need. I’ll drive myself over.”

That reaction caught Charles off guard. In the past, Teresa would’ve been over the moon if he offered to pick her up. But now, her tone was completely flat.

Charles didn’t press her. Instead, he said, “Then could you pick Yolanda up on your way?”

“It’s not really on my

She doubted Charles even knew where she worked. The hospital was in the opposite direction from Yolanda’s preschool. Picking her up first would mean a much longer trip to Logan Manor.

Of course, the “not on the way” part was just an excuse. The truth was that Teresa genuinely didn’t want much contact with Yolanda right

now.

Besides, Yolanda probably wouldn’t even want Teresa to pick her up.

Charles fell silent, but Teresa had already hung up on him.

The driver was already waiting outside, but Yolanda hadn’t gone out. She was

Waiting for Charles to finish his call.

Even though she was still mad at Teresa, Yolanda couldn’t help feeling unhappy that Teresa wasn’t even trying to make it up to her.

And hearing Teresa say on the phone that she wouldn’t be picking her up just made Yolanda even more upset.

She fumed silently, ‘I hadn’t even said if I’d let Mom pick me up. How could she de not to come?‘

Charles put his phone away and noticed Yolanda still hadn’t left. “Why aren’t you going?” he asked, puzzled.

Yolanda pouted. “Mom’s spoiled because of you.”

Charles found that odd. He couldn’t recall ever spoiling Teresa. But he didn’t feel like explaining it to Yolanda.

“Go to school.” he said. “I’ll pick you up this afternoon.” With that, he stood up and headed upstairs.

Yolanda sat at the table a little longer. Finally, she slipped off her chair, unable to stop herself from muttering, “Hmph, I don’t want a bad mom like her anyway.”

It was 6 PM, and Teresa was just about to clock out when a kid with a broken leg got rushed into the emergency room.

Seeing how bad it was, Teresa stuck around to help the doctor on duty patch him up. By the time they got the kid sorted, it was already

past seven.

Teresa changed out of her scrubs, hopped in her car downstairs, and rushed like crazy to get to Logan Manor. Even pushing it, she didn’t pull up until after eight.

The house staff saw her come in and came up to greet her right away. 

Before Teresa even made it to the living room doorway, she heard Richard’s angry voice. “Teresa still isn’t here, and you didn’t even think to call and check on her? What woman doesn’t want a caring partner? You can’t even manage a little concern. You’re like a cold fish! Who’d want someone like that?” 

Charles sat slumped on the sofa, head down, staring at his phone. Some business news app was playing on the screen.

Whether he actually heard Richard’s words or not was unclear. He gave little reaction, not a flicker of emotion showing he was taking it

Yolanda was playing with cards at the little table when she heard Richard’s angry words. She turned to him and said seriously, “Mr. Richard, it was Mom who was late. It’s not that Dad doesn’t care about her.”

Teresa, standing at the doorway, heard Yolanda’s words but didn’t flinch much anymore.

She was used to Yolanda’s attitude. The kid never showed any appreciation and didn’t seem to care about her mom at all.
