41 Let’s Talk Again
Eric’s face was grim. “Since you’re asking so nicely, I’ll go take a look.”
Daniel stood there speechless. He thought, this is exhausting. Without me, this family would fall apart.
He quickly prepared the wheelchair and pushed Eric into the hospital.
Inside the director’s office.
Alice held a cup of tea, gently blowing away the thin steam rising from the surface.
She took a sip, letting the warmth soothe her throat, then calmly opened her mouth.
“I’m not Kite.”
The hospital director, Jack Murphy , didn’t look convinced.
“But your needle therapy… it’s strikingly similar to what’s been rumored about Kite.”
He said “similar,” which meant even he wasn’t fully sure anymore.
Alice smiled faintly. “So, you think I’m Kite’s student?”
Jack answered seriously, “We really need to find Kite, Ms. Spencer. If you know anything about his whereabouts, I’m asking you to please tell me.”
Alice let out a cold laugh. “And if I don’t? Are you saying I’m not leaving this room today?”
Jack froze, recalling how he’d all but dragged her in here earlier.
He awkwardly adjusted his thick–rimmed glasses.
“ That’s not what I meant.”
Alice set her teacup down “Well, in that case , I’ll be going
nd stood up.
And with that, she turned sharply and headed for the door, not even looking back.
Her steps were brisk–like she was afraid if she moved any slower , she’d be pulled back in.

“Ms. Spencer, name your terms! If it’s within my power, I’ll give you anything you want!”
Jack gritted his teeth and made the promise.
Alice’s hand hesitated on the doorknob.
Is this my chance!
Jack has access to that upper echelon of society.
Not top–tier, but….
A razor–thin chance was still a chance. She couldn’t afford to pass it up.
Otherwise, her mentor’s death would remain forever unanswered.
“Ms. Spencer, if you help me save this person, I’ll do anything you ask–as long as it’s legal,” Jack said again, his voice solemn.
Alice wavered.
Just then, the office door swung open.
Eric sat in his wheelchair, expression dark, and his eyes were fixed on Jack .
As the director of St. Anne Hospital, Jack was a top figure in Mapleford’s medical circles.
If he really wanted to do something to Alice, even the Nolans would have to show him some respect
But he wouldn’t.
Eric had already prepared to shoulder any consequences when he ordered Daniel to break down the door.
Yet now that the door was open,
his stern expression faltered for a split second.
The scene he had imagined wasn’t there .
Instead, Alice stood right in front of him–her elegant face cool, with a mocki. nile curling at the corners of her lips.
The atmosphere in the office was oddly tense.

Jack stood at his desk, looking desperate and pleading, as if Alice were some sort of divine.

Eric frowned.
Daniel, unable to hold it in, finally spoke up.
“Mrs. Nolan, did he threaten you? I can-
Alice chuckled softly. “Do I look like someone who got
bullied?”
Daniel immediately clammed up.
Honestly, it was Jack who looked like he’d been bullied.
With a hint of surprise on his face, Daniel glanced at his boss, and then at the pitiful director.
Could it be Mrs. Nolan just doesn’t like Mr. Eric because he’s too young?
Eric’s face returned to its usual calm, his voice unreadable.
“Time to go home.”
Just four words–but to Alice, it was the perfect escape rope.
She turned to Jack. “Sorry, Dr. Murphy. We’ll have to discuss this another time.”
Jack, now 65 and not in the best shape, didn’t care about his aching joints.
The moment she moved to leave, he rushed forward in a half–run.
“Wait–wait, Ms. Spencer! At least give me a condition!”
He just needed something–a direction, a glimmer of hope.
Daniel’s imagination started running wild.
No way … Is this guy trying to offer himself to Mrs. Nolan ?
He immediately shut that thought down.
What the hell am I thinking?
Isn’t Mr. Eric way more handsome, richer, and a far better candidate in every way ?

Alice gave a deadly little smile. “First, I want to know–who is it you’re asking me to save?
Jack had been tight–lipped about the patient’s identity from the start.
Alice might’ve wanted to leverage Jack’s social influence, but she had her own limits.
If the person he wanted her to save was some irredeemable criminal
Well…
She’d make sure they got a needle so precise, they’d wish they hadn’t survived.
Jack hesitated.
Alice kept her fake smile steady. “So, Dr. Murphy, let’s talk again once you’ve made up your mind.”
With that, she stepped forward and gripped Eric’s wheelchair handles.
“I’m going home with my husband now. If you think it through later, you can contact his assistant directly.”
And with that, she gave Daniel a light push forward.
