She then added, “You came straight back to see Eric the second you graduated. Isn’t that enough proof of how you truly feel?”
Alice, Eric’s actual wife, was still standing there, completely ignored like she wasn’t even on the spot.
Yvette wiped away her tears.
“I messed up. Please don’t make excuses for me, Eric. You don’t have to forgive me. I deserve whatever comes.”
Eric finally looked at her and said coldly, “I never blamed you.”
Yvette’s eyes lit up with hope. Her face softened right away.
She stepped forward. “Eric, I-”
But he cut her off with a raised hand, speaking slowly.
“That’s because I never cared if you stayed or left.”
His face didn’t change at all as he dropped that bomb.
Even when Yvette’s face crumbled and her eyes filled with tears, he didn’t flinch or show the slightest bit of sympathy.
Alice stood there, watching like it was some soap opera, but she was getting bored.
It had all the signs of one of those classic childhood sweetheart stories–the girl messed up and took off, and the guy used the moment to humiliate her.
But Eric’s reaction didn’t feel typical.
If he honestly didn’t care about her, then he must be a master at hiding his feelings.
Yvette’s wouldn’t stop crying as if she had unlimited tears in her tear duct. She kept wiping her face, but they kept pouring out.
Sandy tried repeatedly to calm her down, but nothing worked.
Between sobs, Yvette choked out, “I figured you blamed me. But I never thought…”
She looked up, eyes red and swollen.
“I never thought you’d actually hate me.
“And in front of everyone, you couldn’t even let me keep a little pride.”
That was Irene’s breaking point. She jumped in right away, clearly done watching.
“Eric, that was out of line!”

“Honestly, I stayed quict on purpose just now. I didn’t want to interrupt while they cleared things up.
“And come on, you’re not young anymore. Better let us younger folks handle our drama.”
That was enough to nearly send Irene into a raging fit of anger.
Her hand shook as she pointed at Alice. “Shut your mouth!”
Alice smiled faintly. “Why are you so worked up? Unless you’re planning to teach your grandson how to cheat behind his wife’s back?”
Irene’s face went red with fury.

Daniel gave a silent thumbs–up in his mind.
She was amazing–just a few sharp lines, and Irene had no comeback.
He glanced into the room again.
Oscar was calmly drinking tea like none of that concerned him.
Jimmy didn’t react at all, but that wasn’t shocking.
He was old and had dementia. Aside from the occasional outburst, he couldn’t do much anymore.
As for Oscar …
Daniel still couldn’t quite figure it out.
Back before Oscar’s brain bleed, he used to side with Ruby and her kids without question.
That was what led to Eric getting treated so badly.
But now? Ruby and Sandy had both gotten shut down, and Oscar didn’t react at all.
Perhaps after his brain bled, something shifted in his brain, and he sudden, aw things more clearly.
Daniel gave up trying to guess.
Yvette picked the perfect moment to break the silence and ease the tension.
“Let’s not let something so small mess up your family’s peace.”

Irene instantly brightened up. “Eric, you have no idea how much Yvette has done for you.”
Yvette gently shook her head.
“Mrs. Irene, please don’t say that. I did it from the heart. I’m not trying to win him over with gifts.”
Irene gave a pleased nod.

Yvette blushed and smiled softly. “You’re making me embarrassed.”
Irene chuckled and let the earlier drama slide.
