Everyone crowded around Lydia, worried, watching as Vincent marched over to Emily.
“If you’re so into dragging people into water, then stay down there for good,” Vincent snapped, his voice thick with rage and disgust as he kicked Emily’s shoulder.
Emily, who’d just climbed out, toppled back into the pool. A searing pain shot through her shoulder, leaving her unable to lift her arm. Water flooded her mouth; she sputtered and gasped for air.
When she finally managed to surface, she saw Vincent standing by the poolside, ordering the bodyguard, “Have someone keep an eye on her. If she tries to climb out, kick her back in. Only let her up when she admits she’s wrong.”
He couldn’t even be bothered to look at Emily. Turning away, he gently took Lydia’s arm. “Don’t be scared, Lydia. No one’s gonna hurt you. I’ll take you to get dried off and changed.”
“But…” Lydia glanced hesitantly at the pale, shivering Emily in the pool, putting on a show of wanting to plead for her. But in the end, she “couldn’t resist” Vincent and just let him lead her away.
The others followed, but before leaving, they all cast a mocking glance at the pool, their malicious interest still not satisfied.
The water wasn’t cold, but Emily couldn’t stop shaking. She knew how to swim-Vincent had taught her, right here in this pool.
Young Vincent had held the float for her, his face serious. “Don’t worry, Emily. In this pool, I’ve got your back. You’ll never fall on my watch.”
It was the same pool, but the boy who’d promised to protect her had just thrown her in, even ordering his friends to make sure she couldn’t get out. Emily felt the pain in her shoulder hurt worse than any punch Sean had ever landed.
She bit down on her pale lips, trying to climb out of the pool. But the guards wouldn’t let her. They shoved her back, sometimes kicked her. Even when she just tried to grab the edge and catch her breath, they blocked her way.
The guards could all tell that Vincent was intentionally making things difficult for her, so of course, they wouldn’t let her get any chance to catch a break.
The pool was deep, so Emily had to keep treading water. Her old wounds hadn’t healed, and Vincent’s kick had added a new one. After too long in the water, exhaustion started to drag at her.
Suddenly, a cramp seized her leg. Her face went white. But before she could make a sound, she lost her grip and sank under the surface.
Lights swirled in the rippling water above. A suffocating pressure closed in from all sides, seeping into her nose and mouth. It was just too unbearable.
Emily didn’t get it. ‘I’ve let go of any dreams of fitting into the Bennett family and accepted my place, and all I want is a quiet life. Why can’t they just leave me be?
‘Fine. Maybe I should’ve died a long time ago. They sacrificed everything to get her out of St. Gabriel Reform Academy, but I’m not worth it. Maybe this is for the best.’
Just then, a huge wave erupted in the pool. Through the blur, Emily saw a figure racing toward her.
