85 The Boy in the Garden
Henry’s POV
“What’s going on between you two?”
She’d been avoiding me like I was the plague. Was it because of Mateo? Had she fallen for that scheming bastard?
I stared at her face, trying to read her expression, until she sighed and said, “I’m going to treat his younger brother. Alpha, could you please drive faster? I told him I’d be there by ten, and it’s already nine . ”
Oh. Just a medical visit. I let out a breath, but that didn’t mean I let my guard down. The way Mateo looked at her? Way too suspicious.
Even so, I started the car right away and drove toward the outer edge of Shadowmoon Pack. Alpha Mateo’s estate wasn’t inside the pack. He had his own territory–independent, unregulated, crawling with rogues . The kind of place that could get you killed.
If I hadn’t shown up, she would’ve gone there alone? An omega? Damn that Mateo. How could he be so careless with her safety?
As we approached the border, I frowned. “Next time you go somewhere like this, you tell me. ”
Aubrey’s POV
Tell him?
I turned my head to give alpha Henry a mocking look. “What, Alpha, are you planning to follow me around and be my full–time bodyguard?”
“If you need one.” He didn’t even blink.
What the hell.
All my sarcasm got stuck in my throat. If Ella were here, she’d be swearing right alongside me. If the wolves in Shadowmoon Pack found out their alpha wanted to be an omega’s bodyguard, they’d riot.
I turned–away and refused to say another word. Alpha Henry had changed so drastically, I didn’t know how to deal with it anymore.
Fifty minutes later, we arrived at Alpha Mateo’s estate.
It wasn’t anything like I expected. I’d thought he’d live somewhere dark and damp, full of stone and shadow, but instead–lush forest surrounded rolling fields, and sunlight streamed through wooden trellises, dappled across the paths. It looked like something out of a storybook.
It didn’t match Mateo’s cold and guarded personality at all.
I froze for a moment, stunned by the unexpected beauty. Then I quickly got out of the car and let ou breath of relief. At least I was done being stuck in a sealed box with alpha Henry. That had been nerv、 wracking.
Mateo was already waiting for us. He came over the moment he saw me, but when alpha Henry stepped out behind me, his expression tightened.
85 The Boy in the Garden
“ Alpha Henry didn’t trust me to come alone , I explained briefly . “ Now where’s the patient ?:
Mateo’s face immediately shifted–polite, distant, unreadable. “In the back garden. Ms. Aubrey, Alpha Henry , this way please.”
I nodded and walked ahead of them.
In my past life, I’d treated his brother once before. This time, I knew I could handle it even better . But considering what Mateo did to me last time, if I didn’t do something to make him pay for that , I’d be letting myself down.
The path inside was quiet. We didn’t see a single servant. It felt more like a dream than reality.
At the very end of the trail, behind layers of blooming flowers, a boy sat beneath a vine–covered archway , sketching quietly. He was so focused he didn’t even notice we were there.
The scene looked surreal. In my last life, I’d never visited this estate. Back then, Bailey had forced me to treat Mateo’s brother, and by the time Mateo brought me in, Leon was already unconscious and bedridden. I’d never seen him like this–alive, healthy, almost magical.
“That’s Leon?” alpha Henry asked.
Mateo gave a tight nod. Even just saying the name made it clear how much the Zach family expected from this boy.
I pressed my lips together. “You two need to leave. Too many people distract me while I’m working.”
