Harper realized she had worried for nothing. She glanced at Elizabeth again.
Elizabeth was probably up to something, always looking for ways to stay close to David, which naturally left Caroline sidelined.
Caroline, being soft–hearted, didn’t make a fuss about it. And David? He was a man–too laid–back to notice these little maneuvers. That’s why there were moments when he and Elizabeth walked ahead while Caroline trailed behind.
Now that Harper had sorted out her thoughts, she felt much more at ease.
She stepped forward, took David and Caroline’s hands, and placed them together. “My biggest wish is for you two to live a long and happy life as husband and wife. Finding the right partner isn’t easy, so you must treasure each other and stand by one another. Ideally, you’ll have two children–a boy and a girl–but if you want more, that’s even better. Our family has the means to provide for them, and there’s nothing better than a house full of children. But Caroline, if having children feels too exhausting, that’s completely fine too. I won’t force you. Really, just having one grandson would be enough to make me content.”
Harper always had Caroline’s well–being in mind. Though she longed for grandchildren, she didn’t want to pressure Caroline into something she wasn’t ready for. One child would be enough to bring her happiness.
“I’m not trying to rush you,” Harper said with a smile. “These things happen naturally. When the time is right, it’ll happen. Richard and I will be waiting for the good news. The Ellison family hasn’t had a big celebration in quite some time, Caroline. If you’re expecting, we’ll have to throw a proper celebration!” Then, she turned to David. “And you–are you listening? Don’t bury yourself in work all the time. Your wife and children matter just as much!”
David gave a short “Mm” in response.
Harper’s eyes filled with excitement. “So… will I hear good news this year?”
Caroline couldn’t even meet her gaze. She lowered her head slightly, her eyes stinging with emotion.
She couldn’t help but wonder–if Ms. Harper knew the truth, how devastated and furious would she be?
For a brief moment, Caroline wasn’t sure if she should ever tell her or keep the secret forever.
“Yes,” David replied. “Mom, just wait for the good news.”
Harper beamed, her face lighting up with pure joy.
“Good, good! Alright, it’s getting late. I should head home now. You two should rest early.”
Caroline looked at her. “Mom, I’ll walk you out.”
“See? Caroline is so thoughtful,” Harper said with a chuckle. “And you-” she nudged David-“standing there like a statue! David, come on, don’t tell me you’re going to let Caroline send me off by herself?”
