Cathy pouted, clearly unhappy, but she reluctantly muttered about his lack of style and retreated to the dressing room to change.
With Cathy gone, Maggie declared her boredom. “I’ll change too. This dress isn’t right either.” They exited one after another.
Belinda felt her irritation mounting.
After a long day of revising design drafts, she was weary. If these two kept swapping dresses, how much longer would it take to select the jewelry and finally let her leave?
She exhaled a frustrated sigh. “Actually, I think Miss Miller’s dress was quite fitting.”
It was elegant and radiant, perfectly befitting Cathy.
Kristopher, still watching the path Cathy had taken, disagreed. “It’s not right.”
If tomorrow’s banquet were held for Cathy, the blue dress would be fitting.
However, she was not the centerpiece of the upcoming party. Wearing that dress would divert attention from the intended focal point of the event.
Reflecting on this, he turned to Belinda. “You’re also attending tomorrow’s ceremony. Why don’t you pick out a dress for the occasion now?”
Belinda stared at Kristopher, her gaze tinged with disbelief. “You want me to dress up formally and attend tomorrow’s ceremony? For what?” She knew that tomorrow, Kristopher would propose to Cathy. It seemed absurd enough that he expected Belinda to attend their engagement party, and now, he even asked her to wear a gown. Really?
Had he forgotten that they’d just ended their marriage days earlier? Was he losing his mind, expecting his ex-wife to dress up for his new engagement?
Kristopher’s eyes narrowed. “Because tomorrow, you’re the main attraction.”
Belinda couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
She was to be the main attraction at his proposal to another woman? Was he trying to disgust her or perhaps embarrass her? Did it ever cross his mind that she might be the least uncomfortable one there if she showed up?
As these thoughts swirled in her head, Belinda scoffed. “You really want me to be there?”
“Yes, absolutely,” Kristopher confirmed. “Without you, the event wouldn’t hold the same meaning.”
He turned to look at a flesh-pink gown in the boutique window, its fabric glittering with crystals. “That one would look perfect on you.” It was exactly the type of dress Belinda used to like—elegant, sophisticated, and subtly intellectual.
Belinda gave him a chilly stare. “Tell me, do you plan to buy a dress for me here?”
The dresses in the shop were priced so steeply that, pooling all her resources together, Belinda still couldn’t afford even one.
“Yes,” Kristopher replied casually. “We were married once, after all. It’s no great trouble to buy you a dress for tomorrow’s event.”
Belinda arched an eyebrow and offered a smile. “Okay then.”
She gestured towards the most striking dress in the store. It was a dazzling red traditional gown embellished with rubies. “I’ll take that one.”
If Kristopher wanted her to dress up for his engagement party with Cathy, she intended to be the center of attention. As his former wife, she was determined to ensure that every guest noted her presence. Next, she would watch to see how Kristopher and Cathy managed that.
