Envoys of the Cloudwing Pack traveled far and wide, passing on messages.
After days of travel, the news arrived in the capital two days before the festival.
Wendy and her team organized the information into a document, delivering it to the Blackthorn Pack at night.
Wendy handed the message to Paisley, who, without opening it, called everyone to the study and had Caldwell open it.
As it concerned Poly, it was fitting for Caldwell to read it first.
After reading, Caldwell’s forehead veins bulged. “This is an outrage! Just as I thought–a conspiracy! What so–called act of salvation, all a meticulously planned deception!”
Lance took the letter, read it, and summarized, “Those who caused trouble were local thugs. They were paid by the largest estate in Fairfax County–Madison’s. Every time she visited, she stayed there. Adelaide, you had Madison investigated to see if she’d been in Fairfax County around the time of the circus incident. The results confirmed she had. She likely spotted Poly during one of their performances. The supposed rogues were actually Fairfax County police officers. And after Poly left with Madison, the circus troupe leader died.”
Adelaide’s expression changed. “How? Did they find out?”
Lance, holding the letter, said coldly, “Starved to death. His legs were broken, left in a small room. The neighbors reported it only when the body started to smell.”
Paisley said indignantly, “So she not only denied him treatment but also broke his legs and left him to starve alone. How cruel!”
Adelaide, furious and pale, said, “Poly had left him money. If his legs hadn’t been broken, he wouldn’t have starved.”
Paisley, cheeks flushed with anger, said, “How can a woman be so malicious? And Poly, how could she trust her?”
Adelaide glanced at her and said, “Don’t blame Poly. She didn’t know Madison’s true nature. In Fairfax, Madison must have been known as a kind–hearted benefactor. With the supposed rescue and the doctor . she sent for the troupe leader, Poly wouldn’t suspect a conspiracy. She’s a hunter by trade, never expecting to be targeted. She felt indebted for the rescue and the medical care, so she followed Madison to here as a servant to repay her. Madison kept her in her mansion but didn’t mistreat her. I believe Madison occasionally mentioned receiving letters from Fairfax County, saying the troupe leader was f Poly at ease.”

Adelaide clenched the armrests, seething with anger.
She knew Poly was targeted because of her resemblance to Adelaide’s mother.
The real savior was the circus troupe leader, who paid with his life. How could Poly accept that?
Adelaide felt indignant and heartbroken just thinking about it, let alone Poly.
After a moment of silence, Caldwell, his eyes red, said, “Don’t tell Poly about this yet. I can’t imagine what she’d do if she knew the troupe leader was beaten and left to starve.”
Everyone agreed. Putting themselves in her shoes, none could bear it.
Meanwhile, the Hutchinson family stayed quiet, with Madison pressing several times.
