Cathy, catching Kaya’s cue, grasped at her chest, pretending to be breathless, and collapsed into Kaya’s waiting arms.
Kaya turned her anxious gaze toward Kristopher. “Mr. Cox, help! Cathy is not well!”
Seeing Cathy’s distress, Kristopher rushed over without a second thought. He hurried toward her, sweeping her into his arms with urgency. “Cathy, are you alright?”
“Kristopher…”
Cradled in his embrace, Cathy’s eyes welled up with tears as she murmured weakly, “It might be because I’m so upset… My stomach hurts terribly… It’s really painful…”
She appeared utterly pitiful. “The people online are accusing me wrongly. I didn’t do any of those things…”
“Don’t worry about that now.”
Noticing her near-faint, Kristopher’s brow furrowed. He began moving toward the exit, carrying her gently.
“Sir,” Marc called out, seeing Kristopher heading for the door. “You’re leaving just like this? What about the birthday cake and the banquet…”
Kristopher halted, turning to glare at Marc with clear impatience. “Since no birthday is being celebrated today, we’ll cancel it.” With that, he resumed his brisk pace, carrying Cathy away.
“Kristopher…”
Once outside, Cathy leaned against him, her voice choked with sobs. “Can you help me with the online rumors?”
Kristopher frowned as he settled her into the passenger seat of his car and fastened her seatbelt. “Don’t worry about that now. You need to focus on getting better.”
“But…” Tears spilled over as Cathy spoke. “If those online rumors aren’t addressed soon, my career might be ruined… Kristopher, I have less than three months left. I just want to accomplish something. I don’t want to leave this world with regrets.”
Kristopher paused, his movements slowing. “Don’t talk like that.” He took a deep breath and met her gaze firmly. “I’ve found the best stomach cancer specialist in the world for you. I won’t let you die.”
“It’s so ridiculous!” Madisyn exclaimed as they left the hotel, driving Belinda straight to the bar.
Once they were seated with two glasses of red wine in front of them, Madisyn took a sip and patted Belinda on the shoulder. “Even when Kristopher was still your husband, he never thought to celebrate your birthday. Now that you’re divorced, why is he pretending to care? If it’s just for show, couldn’t he at least put in some real effort? Your birthday was two days ago, yet he chooses today to hold a celebration. After three years together, he still doesn’t know when your birthday is. It’s absolutely absurd!”
Belinda sat at the bar, nursing her juice and staring blankly at an apple on the counter. After leaving the venue, her mind had cleared considerably.
As she reflected on the situation, she began to understand there might have been some reasoning behind Kristopher’s decision to organize the birthday banquet. Initially, she had believed Maggie and Helen’s conversation at the restaurant about Kristopher planning to propose to Cathy, jumping to conclusions too quickly.
