He had simply never expected…
In the short span of just over a month, from the start of preparations for this birthday banquet until today, everything had changed. Their relationship had completely transformed.
They had lost their baby and, due to public pressure, had divorced.
“Kristopher!” Maggie suddenly snapped, her face contorted with fury.
Lifting her skirt, she stormed up to Kristopher and demanded, “What on earth is going on here? Isn’t today the day you were supposed to propose to Cathy? Why is it dedicated to holding a birthday banquet for Belinda?”
As she spoke, she glared at Belinda and sneered, “Is there anything worth celebrating about her on her birthday?”
“I indeed have nothing of value to celebrate on my birthday,” Belinda immediately replied. Unfazed by Maggie’s intense gaze, she curled her lips slightly and continued, “I also came here believing that Mr. Cox and Miss Miller’s engagement…”
“The ceremony was supposed to be held today. If I had the faintest idea that Mr. Cox had planned to celebrate my birthday instead…”
Narrowing her eyes, Belinda concluded firmly, “There’s no way on earth that I would have come.”
Belinda’s words ignited chaos throughout the venue, stirring astonishment in every guest. Kristopher’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Belinda.”
Even after their divorce, he had meticulously arranged a birthday banquet for her, yet this was her response?
“Exactly,” Madisyn scoffed. “This entire affair lacks any genuine sentiment. Had we known, we wouldn’t have bothered attending!”
She had been looking forward to witnessing Kristopher’s proposal to Cathy.
“Miss Thomas, how can you say such a thing!” Marc interjected, frowning. “Mr. Cox put a lot of thought into this celebration.”
Kristopher had planned every detail over a month ago. Even after their divorce, he insisted that nothing change, ensuring Belinda lacked for nothing. Just last night, he had canceled several international meetings to take her shopping for an expensive gown.
Marc, who had stood by Kristopher for years, was amazed by his thoughtfulness.
“Oh, has he?” Belinda raised an eyebrow, meeting his inscrutable gaze. “If Mr. Cox had truly thought it through, he wouldn’t have mistaken the date.”
Kristopher’s brows knit together. “What do you mean?”
Belinda felt her heart clench as she held his gaze. With a sniff, she said, “Kristopher, according to my documents, today is my birthday. But for years, I’ve always celebrated it on the fifteenth. The seventeenth is Gillian’s birthday. We once got our identities mixed up. Don’t you recall?”
Kristopher’s face turned pale. He knew Belinda’s history and that she and Gillian did not share a birthday. Yet seeing his expression cut through her like a blade, she realized the man she had loved all these years was not who she thought he was.
Kristopher likely believed that organizing a grand birthday celebration would deeply move Belinda, which is why he insisted on her presence. Sadly for him, his well-intentioned actions only felt like hollow gestures.
